History of Area
Lansing became the permanent state capital in 1847. Originally, the then small town grew slowly as the home of state government and small industries. The real industrial flowering of the city is credited to R. E. Olds, whose buggy was one of the first practical motor vehicles. By the early 1900’s, Lansing was a leading maker of automobiles and remains so in 2006. Primarily residential, East Lansing complements the governmental and industrial emphasis of Lansing. The creation of Michigan Agricultural College in 1855 as the nation’s first land-grant school spurred the town’s growth; since then East Lansing’s development has paralleled that of the school, which became Michigan State University.
