Community Profile

All Saints Episcopal Church is located in East Lansing, Michigan, which is primarily a residential community, as well as home to Michigan State University. East Lansing is part of a metropolitan area of approximately 450,000 centered around the capital city of Michigan -- Lansing. The greater Lansing area is located in the south central region of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Because Lansing–East Lansing are home to state government and a "big ten" university, the community is vibrant and offers many amenities and a quality of life not found in most Midwestern cities of a similar size.

We are the only Episcopal parish in East Lansing, but not the only congregation. Canterbury MSU, a chaplaincy of the Diocese of Michigan, is also located here.
In all, there are nine congregations in the metropolitan area, plus five others in adjacent dioceses that are very close to the Lansing metropolitan area. All fourteen maintain close fellowship, and inter-diocesan cooperation is an exciting prospect for the future.

As part of the fellowship, the Lansing Area Episcopal Projects (LAEP) meets bi-monthly to exchange information and carry out joint activities designed to further diocesan and ecumenical growth in the area.  LAEP is a wholly voluntary organization. It is not mandated by the diocesan canons in any way but may apply to become chartered by the Diocese of Michigan as a special ministry initiative in the future.

    K-12 education
Many All Saints parishioners attend or have graduated from The East Lansing Public Schools. The back of the church ( the office and classroom wing) is across the street from the back of the current, recently renovated EL high school. The front of the church ( the sanctuary side) is across the street from the original EL high school. It is now a community center. The Catholic school, St. Thomas Aquinas, is within six blocks. Other school districts All Saints families attend are in the Okemos, Lansing, Haslett, Holt, Dewitt and Mason schools.

    Public universities
All Saints is located five city blocks from the campus of Michigan State University (MSU). Our neighborhood residents are mostly students.  We rent parking spaces in our front lot to students for weekday parking. We are so close to campus that the cheers of Saturday football games can be heard. Those cheers continue inside the church on Sunday morning when the Spartans win, but turn to groans when they lose. Tension runs especially high when the Spartans play the Wolverines of the University of Michigan. Michigan’s Ann Arbor campus is about an hour away by car. Many All Saints parishioners attend the UM. Many parishioners are employed as faculty and staff at MSU. Others volunteer in activities, including women’s basketball and the MSU Choral Union. Western Michigan University is also represented in our congregation.

    Community Colleges
Lansing Community College recently opened a learning center in East Lansing, adjacent to the MSU campus. Several All Saints parishioners are employed at the college, and others attend as students. An All Saints parishioner is a former president of the college.

    Realtors
Lansing has many reputable realtors. An All Saints parishioner is affiliated with Tomie Raines, a long-time East Lansing realtor.

    Medical
All Saints parishioners who are physicians often practice an at-work visiting ministry for parishioners admitted to Sparrow Hospital and Ingham Regional Medical Center.

    Recreation
Outdoors is big here, starting with the open-air football stadium at MSU and the Red Cedar River flowing through the campus. Ingham County and the City of Lansing maintain an impressive park system, which offer golf, tobogganing and cross-country skiing, as well as passive recreational opportunities. The area also offers white water rafting and climbing. The City of East Lansing Patriarch Park boasts a community-built playscape. The city community center, with physical fitness facilities, is located across the street from the church. Michigan is the Great Lakes state. One is never far from water—either one of the Great Lakes or one of the thousands of smaller inland bodies of water. For the outdoors enthusiast, it is a four-season wonderland with fishing, boating, hunting and skiing, and many other recreational options.
